Frances began teaching in Ralston School near Spence Nursing Home after graduating in 1913 from Slippery Rock Normal School. It was at Ralston School, that Frances won recognition for having a State prize rural school. This was the first one in Butler County, by County Superintendant of Schools Mr. Frank McClung. After several years, she went to Pittsburgh area to teach in Crafton and Dormont Schools (McKeeport). Frances became an Elementary Principal and lived in YMCA with other Slippery Rock girls. After marrying Carl McMullen, the family moved to Slippery Rock until their deaths. Frances served as a member of the Board of Education in 1920's and as Register of Birth and Deaths for Slippery Rock. At the death of William C. Riddle, Frances became tax collector untill 1940's. After this time Mrs. McMullen returned to teaching and retired from Pottersville School, part of Slippery Rock School Jointure. All of her life, she was an active Methodist writing and publishing History of the local Methodist Church. At this time, Frances was also continually involved with Republican politics. As an elder woman she indulged her hobby of pattery with Dr. McVitty as Slippery Rock College and helped organize the local oil painting group with Mr. Hickman.
