Frank Clutton:

[Manning.FTW]
Came from West Liberty.
In 1875 the Cluttons came to Slippery Rock from West Liberty. Frank entered the carriage building shop conducted by William Sturedevant where he mastered the trade of carriage painting that he followed for a few years prior to his marrige in Butler. Later he was a manager of Bards store in Coaltown until a cyclone destroyed the store. Mr. Clutton returned to Slippery Rock and entered into a partnership with his brother George Wilson Clutton in the drug and grocery business. Both stores were conducted for a time. When the grocery business was sold, George entered the Drug business in New Castle and at this time the two brothers were partners. Later the Slippery Rock store was sold and after a few months Frank Clutton bought the local pharmacy and remained in the drug business until 1907 when he was forced to retire due to cancer. This Drug store was located on Main Street in the Bank building between Friedman and Alpers grocery store and Friedmans' Clothing store. After selling the pharmacy, Mr. Clutton served on the Board of Trustees at Slippery Rock University. He was secretary of the Board of Trustees 1906-1908 and later served as Superintendent of the Buildings and Grounds. In 1884-1887 Frank managed a store for Hazard Coal Company and moved in 1887 to work for Westerman in Chicora as a bookkeeper. Later in 1887 the Frank Clutton family returned to Centerville where Frank ran the General Store, Clutton Bros. No. 2 while George ran the drug store. In 1891 George Clutton moved to New Castle to run the drug store there. Frank sold the General Store and ran the Centerville Drug Store until his health forced him to sell it in 1906 to Maybury. Prior to this, the Clutton Partnership was dissolved in 1899. Frank had a long history of skin cancer of the face.
