Notes:
Wilfred, son of Joseph Aldous, was employed as a Sugar Boiler with a Sweet Manufacturer in Roch dale named Wilby's. He was called-up for service with the RAF in 1939 and was initially stationed at Odiham for a while before being transferred to Inda and eventually Cocos Island in the Indian Ocean. Wilf worked in the Officers Mess for most of his service.
After the war Wilf returned to his home in Frank Street, Rochdale (now demolished) and his work with Wilby's. His brother-in-law, Ernest Whittles and son of the owner, also worked at Wilby's as a salesman (Commercial Traveller. Seeking better prospects, the family moved to Accrington in 1950 where Wilf had been offered a Managerial position at Tom Hodgson's, another sweet manufacturer. The family lived at 92 Steiner Street, Accrington for a few years before taking on a mixed business, a corner shop on Hyndburn Road. During this period, both children, Barry and Barbara were married. Barry, the eldest moved to Bury with his wife Edna in 1960 while Barbara, then living at Bolton Avenue, Huncoat, emigrated to New Zealand with her husband John Rushton and their five children David, Ian, Carol, and Jane in 1964. The shop was run by Bertha (Betty) until 1962 when the couple retired to nearby Park Road.
Wilf had two major hobby's, painting and modelling. There are many of his paintings distributed amongst family and friends and also some that were specially commissioned. He had is pictures exhibited in local art galleries on several occasions. His modelling activities were mainly to do with scale model sailing ships although both he and Barry shared the love of flying model aircraft for a period of time in the 1950's. In his later years, Wilf got pleasure from sailing scale model boats with Bury Maritime Marine Modelling Society.
Wilfred died of cancer in Blackburn Royal Infirmary in 1988 at the age of 74. Betty now lives in a Bungalow on Buckingham Drive, Accrington[Aldous_4.FTW]
