He saw active duty in the middle east. Had his 21st birthday on board ship off the coast of South Africa. Orphaned at 14 years in Toowoomba, Queensland. Taken in by Uncle Clarence Gruby Lindsay and Aunt Emma nee Thoms. Clarence became Herbert's legal guardian after the death of his parents (from apprenticeship papers). Herb soon moved to Richard Rye and Lucy nee Lindsay's home as he was close to his cousins Stella and Elsie. Plaque in Naval Memorial Wall. Lived at 57 Wylma Street, HOlland Park, Brisbane, Queesland
