[stephenaldous2.ged] AN EXAMINATION OF WITNESSES SWORN AND EXAMINED at the Parish of Friston in the Liberty of Saint Etheldred, in the County of Suffolk, on the seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty eight before me John Wood, the Younger, Coroner for the said Liberty, on view of the body of JOHN CRISP aged sixty five years and upwards, then and there lying dead. [Hand written] Isaac Crisp of Friston aforesaid and Mariner upon his oath saith as follows - When I am not at sea I live at home with John Crisp my father who was a labourer. Until the last eight weeks I had not been at home for thirteen months - but for the last eight weeks I have slept at home every night. Yesterday the sixteenth day of March instant my ffather went to his daily labour about half past five in the morning. I left his cottage about a quarter past six. I went to Aldbro' and was there all day, and I returned home to Friston about a quarter past seven last evening - my ffather had returned home and had begun to get his supper and I sat down with Mary Crisp my sister and we all three had supper together - we had some dumplings and hot meat for supper - my ffather ate a very hearty supper and I never saw him eat a better supper nor heard him laugh and talk ever. My sister and I both ate of the same supper both dumplings and meat and we all three had tea together. My ffather did not complain in the least of any pain or being ill. I went out to my brothers after supper and came home at seven minutes before ten - my ffather was then in bed, my sister was in the house and in bed too. I generally slept with my ffather who was a widower. My father heard me come in and said "Do you want a light, Isaac?" I told him it was moonlight and I could make out without one. My ffather asked me if it rained and I told him it did a little. I asked my ffather if his clock had struck ten - he said as he did not go to bed till five past nine and the clock had not struck ten - I then undressed and got into bed and just as I got into bed the clock struck ten - he moved [removed] cobly [comfortably?] afterwards and began to snore and the last two or three times snored very loudly - I spoke to him two or three different times but got no answer - My Sister heard her ffather snore and got a light and came to her ffather's bedside - and as soon as she saw him she said he was gone - I was satisfied that was the case and ran and called my two brothers who live a few roads off. I am quite satisfied he died a natural death. My ffather was in constant work and did not want for any of the necessities of life. My ffather lived in Friston more than thirty years. Isaac Crisp Sworn before me John Wood Verdict - Died a natural Death by the Visitation of God. Jurors' Names. John Wood, coroner William Sharmen Charles Bridges Robert Hammond Robert Rouse Henry Johnson George French George Scarlett Nathan Licence Robt Reynolds John Crowe Jonathan Studd Richard How George Balls Lionel Baldry Held at the Chequers Inn [house of William Sharman] in the Parish of Friston.
