Claudia had an illegitimate child (by the gentry who she had been a kitchen maid to) and the child had been fostered out to a woman in Beccles who had brought her up. Claudia paid the child's board and keep but never acknowledged her. The illegitimate child was discovered when Claudia was hoping to emigrate to Canada before WW1. She was refused entry to Canada as a result. (Nigel Cooper Family History vol 4 1991). Claudia was the naughty girl of the family. On one occasion she had to take the headmistress her dinner. She had to cross the playground from the dinner hall to the headmistress' room. On the way across, Claudia ate all the headmistress' crackling. Somehow the headmistress found out and Claudia was caned. She also received the cane for throwing snowballs at the headmaster of the boys' school in Bungay. For a long time, Claudia was housekeeper for a Mr Stock, who lived in Warren Rd, Wanstead. Gladys Haves lived nearby in Leicester Rd. Gladys often went to Warren Rd to help Claudia with the housework. Mr Stock was a prosperous builder in the Wanstead area and Claudia always had huge joints of meat to cook. She used to make delicious steak and kidney pies. In the school holidays, Gladys sometimes used to take her granddaughter Janet with her to play in Mr Stock's large garden.
